In Vancouver (and across Canada), what most people call “moving insurance” is often valuation coverage, not traditional insurance. This means the moving company’s liability is limited and based on specific rules—not full replacement protection.
There are typically two types of coverage:
Basic Carrier Liability (included by default)
This is minimal protection. Movers are liable based on the weight of the item, not its actual value. If something expensive is damaged, the payout may be far lower than what it’s worth.
Full-Value Protection (additional coverage)
This offers better protection. The mover is responsible for repairing, replacing, or compensating you for the item at its current value (depending on the agreement).
It’s important to understand:
Movers are not automatically responsible for full replacement costs unless you specifically arrange proper coverage.
Also, moving companies may deny claims if:
Items were packed by the owner (not movers)
Pre-existing damage wasn’t documented
Fragile items weren’t properly declared
Costs vary depending on the level of protection and the value of your items. Here’s what you can realistically expect:
Usually free
Coverage is limited (often based on weight, not value)
Example: a 20 lb TV may only be covered for a small amount—even if it’s worth $1,000+
This option is not enough for valuable items.
Typically costs 1% to 5% of the total declared value
Example:
$20,000 shipment → $200–$1,000 insurance cost
Factors that affect price:
Total value of belongings
Type of items (fragile, high-value)
Distance of the move
Packing method (professional vs DIY)
Some homeowners choose independent insurance providers.
Costs vary but are often more flexible
Can cover:
High-value items (art, electronics, antiques)
Situations movers don’t cover
This is a good option if you’re moving expensive or irreplaceable items.
Even with better coverage, there are common exclusions:
Items packed by the owner (PBO – Packed By Owner)
Cash, documents, jewelry (unless declared separately)
Mechanical/electronic failure not caused by impact
Damage due to poor packing
Delays or indirect losses
Always ask for a full list of exclusions before signing anything.
Don’t just list “TV” or “laptop.” Include:
Brand, model, condition
Photos before the move
This makes claims much easier to prove.
If you pack items yourself, movers can deny responsibility. For:
TVs
Glass items
Electronics
It’s worth paying for professional packing.
Before booking, ask:
“What exactly is your liability per item?”
“How are claims calculated?”
“What situations void coverage?”
If they can’t clearly answer → walk away.
Some policies:
Require a minimum claim amount
Have maximum payouts per item
Do not rush this step.
Check boxes and furniture
Note any damage on the bill of lading
Take photos immediately
Once you sign without notes, claims become much harder.
If a quote is significantly lower than others, it often means:
Minimal or no real coverage
Hidden fees later
Cheap moves = higher risk.
